An defense minister has revealed that the MoD is actively examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been told to avoid talking about secret matters in any cars.
Security Guidance for MoD Staff
In a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in China-made cars.
He explained that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that safety is a concern in all modern cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Wider Security Context
The revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and cause disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been shining lasers at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
This wider defence environment underscores the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in all areas of official activities, from transport use to discussions practices.
