Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."
In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
