The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
